AI-designed catalog images: how feed-bound templates change Meta and Google ads
Most catalog ads on Meta and Google still show whatever URL sits in the image_link field of your product feed. That URL usually points at the same JPEG your storefront serves to organic visitors — a clean studio shot, maybe a lifestyle photo, no overlay, no price, no badge. Functional. Not optimised.
For most merchants this is leaving CTR on the table. The same Meta catalog ad with a price overlay, a brand frame, and a clean background outperforms the raw photo by a meaningful margin in nearly every test we've run or seen reported. The catch: designing those overlays manually for every product in a 10,000-SKU catalog is impossible. Hand-designing per product means hand-redesigning on every price change. Nobody does it.

Why catalog ad creative is worth obsessing over
Catalog ads are the long tail of paid social. A merchant with 10,000 SKUs running Advantage+ shopping campaigns isn't hand-picking which product Meta shows to which user — the algorithm is. Each creative impression is a trade-off between intent (which product does this user want?) and attention (will this thumbnail stop the scroll?).
Static product photos are tuned for the first half. They tell Meta what the product is. They are bad at the second half. A clean photo of a kettle on a white background looks identical to fifty other kettles in the feed. A photo of the same kettle with a price overlay, a sale badge, and your brand-coloured frame is unmistakable in two milliseconds of scroll.
The compounding effect is bigger than people expect. Every click you didn't earn is a downstream conversion you didn't earn. Across a sustained campaign, a 15% lift in CTR means meaningfully more revenue at the same ad spend, because the lift compounds with Meta's lookalike-style optimisation: a creative that wins attention earlier in the auction earns cheaper future impressions.
Static vs. dynamic — what actually changes
The mechanical difference is small. The workflow difference is large.
Static path
Your e-commerce platform exports an XML feed. Meta or Google fetches the feed, reads image_link, fetches the URL, displays the photo as-is. To change the image, you change the source file on your CDN.
Dynamic path
Your e-commerce platform still exports the same XML feed. A feed editor (Emberfeed in our case, but the architecture is the same for Cropink, Marpipe, Confect, and friends) rewrites theimage_linkURL to point at the editor's renderer. When Meta fetches that URL, the renderer composes the image: original product photo + price overlay + sale badge + brand frame + whatever else the template specifies. A normal-looking JPEG is returned. Meta caches it like any other image.
What "AI-designed" actually means here
The phrase gets thrown around vaguely. In the context of feed-bound catalog templates, AI usually means one of three distinct assists, sometimes combined.
Layout suggestion
You describe what you want — "product centred, price overlay bottom-right, brand colour band on the left, badge for sale items in the top-left corner" — and the AI produces a working template. In Emberfeed's case the template is HTML+CSS, so you can hand-edit anything the AI generated. Think of it as a fast starting point rather than a finished design.
Background removal
Single-product images on busy backgrounds underperform clean ones. AI background removal (rembg, sharp-based pipelines, or hosted APIs) lets you cut the product out without re-shooting it. Useful for fashion, jewellery, electronics, anywhere your product photo was taken on a non-white surface.
Variant generation
Once you have one template, AI can propose variants — different colour palettes, different typography weights, different price positions — for A/B testing. The constraint AI can't replace is the underlying brand judgement: which variant matches your brand voice. AI can produce twenty variants quickly; you still pick the three to test.
Four template recipes that move CTR
These are the patterns that show up consistently in tests across our customer base and the broader catalog-ad-tools ecosystem. None of them are revolutionary. The point is that they all require feed binding to be practical.
1. Price overlay with live data binding
A price chip in a corner of the image, displayed in your brand font and colour. The chip pulls from the price orsale_price field of the feed, so when you change a price in your e-commerce platform, the rendered image updates on the next feed refresh. No manual re-export of images.
2. Conditional sale badge
A "Sale" or "-30%" badge that appears only on products with a non-empty sale_priceAND whose discount percentage exceeds a threshold you set (e.g. 20%). The badge disappears the moment a product comes off sale. This is impossible with manual image editing at scale; it's trivial with a feed-bound template that includes a Handlebars conditional.
3. Brand frame for in-feed recognition
A consistent border, gradient, or colour band wrapping every product. A mid-strength signal — easy to overdo. Test it. Brands with strong visual identity (think Glossier, Aesop, On Running) often benefit. Brands with weak identity often look worse.
4. AI cut-out + clean background
For categories where the original product photo is on a cluttered or non-white background — fashion shot on a model, jewellery on a hand, electronics on a desk — replace the background with a clean fill. This works particularly well for Google Merchant compliance: GMC prefers white/transparent backgrounds with the product filling 75–90% of the frame.
How feed-bound rendering actually works (the mechanics)
The technical pieces aren't mysterious. They're old:
- Your storefront exports an XML feed. Standard Google Merchant format with the
g:namespace, or whatever your platform emits. - The editor parses the feed and stores the products in its own database — title, description, price, image_link, all the rest.
- You design a template. HTML + CSS in code mode, or a visual editor with layered text + image + shape components.
- The editor serves a new feed URL. Same XML structure as your source, but every
image_linkrewritten to point at the renderer:https://emberfeed.com/api/render/<feedId>/<productId>. - Meta or Google fetches the new feed URL. They see normal-looking image_link URLs. They fetch each one to grab the image.
- The renderer responds with a JPEG composed from your template plus that product's data. Cached at the CDN edge so subsequent fetches are fast.
- When your prices change, the next feed refresh tells the renderer the data changed. The cache key bumps. Meta and Google see fresh pixels.
Two pieces matter for performance. The cache strategy — pre-warm rendered images so the first ad-platform fetch is fast, not slow — and the freshness logic — invalidate on price/availability change so the platforms always see current data. Both are pure engineering, nothing AI about them.
When AI-designed templates LOSE
They're not a universal upgrade. Specific cases where templated images are worse than the original photo:
- Lifestyle photography is the creative. If your product photo is a model wearing the dress in golden-hour light, putting a price chip in the corner subtracts from the photo, not adds. Brand-led fashion brands often skip catalog templates entirely for top-of-funnel ads and only template for retargeting.
- High-end / minimalist brands. Apple-style minimalism is hard to template. The point of the photo is the negative space; chips in the corner read as cheap.
- Single-product ad accounts. Templates pay off when you have many products. A single-product e-shop running ads on one SKU is better off hand-designing five creative variants.
- Regulated categories.Pharma, supplements, financial products — overlays sometimes trip platform policy reviews even when they're factually accurate.
What it costs
The category splits into three rough tiers.
